Dunedin Botanic Garden (opens in a new tab)
New Zealand's oldest botanic garden, established in 1863 and covering 28 hectares of the Town Belt. It has a large rhododendron dell and an Edwardian glasshouse, the Winter Garden, and was rated a Garden of International Significance in 2010.
Labelled plant collections and a heated glasshouse to study plant identification, seasonal care and large-scale garden management.
Larnach Castle gardens (opens in a new tab)
Gardens on the ridge of the Otago Peninsula that were the first in the South Island to be rated a Garden of International Significance by the New Zealand Gardens Trust.
A highly rated garden on the peninsula to visit and compare with the city's public gardens.
Lan Yuan Dunedin Chinese Garden (opens in a new tab)
A Chinese garden beside Toitū Otago Settlers Museum, prefabricated in Shanghai, rebuilt in Dunedin and opened in 2008. Its plants were sourced locally rather than imported.
Shows how hard landscaping, water and planting combine in a traditional garden style, useful for landscaping students.
Orokonui Ecosanctuary forest restoration (opens in a new tab)
The sanctuary's 307 hectares of coastal Otago forest are fenced and managed as a mainland island, with volunteers helping with tasks such as pest tracking.
